Description:

eSpeak is a software speech synthesizer for English and other languages. eSpeak produces good quality English speech. It uses a different synthesis method from other open source TTS engines, and sounds quite different. It's perhaps not as natural or "smooth", but some people may find the articulation clearer and easier to listen to for long periods. eSpeak supports several languages, however in most cases these are initial drafts and need more work to improve them. It can run as a command line program to speak text from a file or from stdin.

Handy Yum Commands for espeak


Control the espeak package with the following handy commands outlined below.


Command

Description of Command

yum install espeak

This command will install espeak on the server.

yum remove espeak

This command will un-install espeak on the server. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove espeak, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y remove espeak

This command will un-install espeak on the server. When you run this command with th e -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove espeak when using the -y flag.

yum update espeak

This command will update espeak to the latest version. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove espeak, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y update espeak

This command will update espeak to the latest version. When you run this command with the -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove espeak when using the -y flag.

yum info espeak

This command will show you core information about the espeak package.

yum deplist espeak

This command will show you the dependencies for espeak. Thankfully, when using Yum, if dependencies are required, these are also installed at the same time so you don't have to worry too much about that.

yum check-update espeak

This command will check if there is an update waiting on espeak. When you run this command this will return nothing if there is nothing to update, or, will return the package name if the package is due to be updated.
