Fetchmail is a remote mail retrieval and forwarding utility intended for use over on-demand TCP/IP links, like SLIP or PPP connections. Fetchmail supports every remote-mail protocol currently in use on the Internet (POP2, POP3, RPOP, APOP, KPOP, all IMAPs, ESMTP ETRN, IPv6, and IPSEC) for retrieval. Then Fetchmail forwards the mail through SMTP so you can read it through your favorite mail client. Install fetchmail if you need to retrieve mail over SLIP or PPP connections.

Handy Yum Commands for fetchmail


Control the fetchmail package with the following handy commands outlined below.

yum install fetchmail

This command will install fetchmail on the server.

yum remove fetchmail

This command will un-install fetchmail on the server. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove fetchmail, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y remove fetchmail

This command will un-install fetchmail on the server. When you run this command with th e -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove fetchmail when using the -y flag.

yum update fetchmail

This command will update fetchmail to the latest version. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove fetchmail, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y update fetchmail

This command will update fetchmail to the latest version. When you run this command with the -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove fetchmail when using the -y flag.

yum info fetchmail

This command will show you core information about the fetchmail package.

yum deplist fetchmail

This command will show you the dependencies for fetchmail. Thankfully, when using Yum, if dependencies are required, these are also installed at the same time so you don't have to worry too much about that.

yum check-update fetchmail

This command will check if there is an update waiting on fetchmail. When you run this command this will return nothing if there is nothing to update, or, will return the package name if the package is due to be updated.
