Description:

gedit is a small, but powerful text editor designed specifically for the GNOME desktop. It has most standard text editor functions and fully supports international text in Unicode. Advanced features include syntax highlighting and automatic indentation of source code, printing and editing of multiple documents in one window. gedit is extensible through a plugin system, which currently includes support for spell checking, comparing files, viewing CVS ChangeLogs, and adjusting indentation levels. Further plugins can be found in the gedit-plugins package.

Handy Yum Commands for gedit


Control the gedit package with the following handy commands outlined below.

yum install gedit

This command will install gedit on the server.

yum remove gedit

This command will un-install gedit on the server. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove gedit, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y remove gedit

This command will un-install gedit on the server. When you run this command with th e -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove gedit when using the -y flag.

yum update gedit

This command will update gedit to the latest version. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove gedit, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y update gedit

This command will update gedit to the latest version. When you run this command with the -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove gedit when using the -y flag.

yum info gedit

This command will show you core information about the gedit package.

yum deplist gedit

This command will show you the dependencies for gedit. Thankfully, when using Yum, if dependencies are required, these are also installed at the same time so you don't have to worry too much about that.

yum check-update gedit

This command will check if there is an update waiting on gedit. When you run this command this will return nothing if there is nothing to update, or, will return the package name if the package is due to be updated.
