Description:

The Sendmail program is a very widely used Mail Transport Agent (MTA). MTAs send mail from one machine to another. Sendmail is not a client program, which you use to read your email. Sendmail is a behind-the-scenes program which actually moves your email over networks or the Internet to where you want it to go. If you ever need to reconfigure Sendmail, you will also need to have the sendmail-cf package installed. If you need documentation on Sendmail, you can install the sendmail-doc package.

Handy Yum Commands for sendmail


Control the sendmail package with the following handy commands outlined below.


Command

Description of Command

yum install sendmail

This command will install sendmail on the server.

yum remove sendmail

This command will un-install sendmail on the server. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove sendmail, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y remove sendmail

This command will un-install sendmail on the server. When you run this command with th e -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove sendmail when using the -y flag.

yum update sendmail

This command will update sendmail to the latest version. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove sendmail, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y update sendmail

This command will update sendmail to the latest version. When you run this command with the -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove sendmail when using the -y flag.

yum info sendmail

This command will show you core information about the sendmail package.

yum deplist sendmail

This command will show you the dependencies for sendmail. Thankfully, when using Yum, if dependencies are required, these are also installed at the same time so you don't have to worry too much about that.

yum check-update sendmail

This command will check if there is an update waiting on sendmail. When you run this command this will return nothing if there is nothing to update, or, will return the package name if the package is due to be updated.
