Detect if we are running in a virtual machine

Description:

virt-what is a shell script which can be used to detect if the program is running in a virtual machine. The program prints out a list of "facts" about the virtual machine, derived from heuristics. One fact is printed per line. If nothing is printed and the script exits with code 0 (no error), then it can mean either that the program is running on bare-metal or the program is running inside a type of virtual machine which we don't know about or can't detect. Handy Yum Commands for virt-what


Control the virt-what package with the following handy commands outlined below.


Command

Description of Command

yum install virt-what

This command will install virt-what on the server.

yum remove virt-what

This command will un-install virt-what on the server. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove virt-what, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y remove virt-what

This command will un-install virt-what on the server. When you run this command with th e -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove virt-what when using the -y flag.

yum update virt-what

This command will update virt-what to the latest version. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove virt-what, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y update virt-what

This command will update virt-what to the latest version. When you run this command with the -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove virt-what when using the -y flag.

yum info virt-what

This command will show you core information about the virt-what package.

yum deplist virt-what

This command will show you the dependencies for virt-what. Thankfully, when using Yum, if dependencies are required, these are also installed at the same time so you don't have to worry too much about that.

yum check-update virt-what

This command will check if there is an update waiting on virt-what. When you run this command this will return nothing if there is nothing to update, or, will return the package name if the package is due to be updated.
