Description:

nss-mdns is a plugin for the GNU Name Service Switch (NSS) functionality of the GNU C Library (glibc) providing host name resolution via Multicast DNS (aka Zeroconf, aka Apple Rendezvous, aka Apple Bonjour), effectively allowing name resolution by common Unix/Linux programs in the ad-hoc mDNS domain .local. nss-mdns provides client functionality only, which means that you have to run a mDNS responder daemon separately from nss-mdns if you want to register the local host name via mDNS (e.g. Avahi).

Handy Yum Commands for nss-mdns


Control the nss-mdns package with the following handy commands outlined below.

yum install nss-mdns

This command will install nss-mdns on the server.

yum remove nss-mdns

This command will un-install nss-mdns on the server. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove nss-mdns, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y remove nss-mdns

This command will un-install nss-mdns on the server. When you run this command with th e -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove nss-mdns when using the -y flag.

yum update nss-mdns

This command will update nss-mdns to the latest version. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove nss-mdns, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y update nss-mdns

This command will update nss-mdns to the latest version. When you run this command with the -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove nss-mdns when using the -y flag.

yum info nss-mdns

This command will show you core information about the nss-mdns package.

yum deplist nss-mdns

This command will show you the dependencies for nss-mdns. Thankfully, when using Yum, if dependencies are required, these are also installed at the same time so you don't have to worry too much about that.
