Vi is the original screen based text editor for Unix systems. It is considered the standard text editor, and is available on almost all Unix systems. Nvi is intended as a "bug-for-bug compatible" clone of the original BSD vi editor. As such, it doesn't have a lot of snazzy features as do some of the other vi clones such as elvis and vim. However, if all you want is vi, this is the one to get.

Handy Yum Commands for nvi


Control the nvi package with the following handy commands outlined below.

Description of Command

yum install nvi

This command will install nvi on the server.

yum remove nvi

This command will un-install nvi on the server. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove nvi, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y remove nvi

This command will un-install nvi on the server. When you run this command with th e -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove nvi when using the -y flag.

yum update nvi

This command will update nvi to the latest version. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove nvi, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y update nvi

This command will update nvi to the latest version. When you run this command with the -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove nvi when using the -y flag.

yum info nvi

This command will show you core information about the nvi package.

yum deplist nvi

This command will show you the dependencies for nvi. Thankfully, when using Yum, if dependencies are required, these are also installed at the same time so you don't have to worry too much about that.

yum check-update nvi

This command will check if there is an update waiting on nvi. When you run this command this will return nothing if there is nothing to update, or, will return the package name if the package is due to be updated.
