Description:

syslog-ng, as the name shows, is a syslogd replacement, but with new functionality for the new generation. The original syslogd allows messages only to be sorted based on priority/facility pairs; syslog-ng adds the possibility to filter based on message contents using regular expressions. The new configuration scheme is intuitive and powerful. Forwarding logs over TCP and remembering all forwarding hops makes it ideal for firewalled environments.

Handy Yum Commands for syslog-ng


Control the syslog-ng package with the following handy commands outlined below.

yum install syslog-ng

This command will install syslog-ng on the server.

yum remove syslog-ng

This command will un-install syslog-ng on the server. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove syslog-ng, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y remove syslog-ng

This command will un-install syslog-ng on the server. When you run this command with th e -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove syslog-ng when using the -y flag.

yum update syslog-ng

This command will update syslog-ng to the latest version. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove syslog-ng, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y update syslog-ng

This command will update syslog-ng to the latest version. When you run this command with the -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove syslog-ng when using the -y flag.

yum info syslog-ng

This command will show you core information about the syslog-ng package.

yum deplist syslog-ng

This command will show you the dependencies for syslog-ng. Thankfully, when using Yum, if dependencies are required, these are also installed at the same time so you don't have to worry too much about that.

yum check-update syslog-ng

This command will check if there is an update waiting on syslog-ng. When you run this command this will return nothing if there is nothing to update, or, will return the package name if the package is due to be updated.
