Bzip2 is a freely available, patent-free, high quality data compressor. Bzip2 compresses files to within 10 to 15 percent of the capabilities of the best techniques available. However, bzip2 has the added benefit of being approximately two times faster at compression and six times faster at decompression than those techniques. Bzip2 is not the fastest compression utility, but it does strike a balance between speed and compression capability. Install bzip2 if you need a compression utility.

Handy Yum Commands for bzip2


Control the bzip2 package with the following handy commands outlined below.

yum install bzip2

This command will install bzip2 on the server.

yum remove bzip2

This command will un-install bzip2 on the server. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove bzip2, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y remove bzip2

This command will un-install bzip2 on the server. When you run this command with th e -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove bzip2 when using the -y flag.

yum update bzip2

This command will update bzip2 to the latest version. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove bzip2, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y update bzip2

This command will update bzip2 to the latest version. When you run this command with the -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove bzip2 when using the -y flag.

This command will show you core information about the bzip2 package.
