Description:

SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is a protocol used for network management. The NET-SNMP project includes various SNMP tools: an extensible agent, an SNMP library, tools for requesting or setting information from SNMP agents, tools for generating and handling SNMP traps and a version of the netstat command which uses SNMP. This package contains the snmpd and snmptrapd daemons, documentation, etc. You will probably also want to install the net-snmp-utils package, which contains NET-SNMP utilities.

Handy Yum Commands for net-snmp


Control the net-snmp package with the following handy commands outlined below.

yum install net-snmp

This command will install net-snmp on the server.

yum remove net-snmp

This command will un-install net-snmp on the server. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove net-snmp, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y remove net-snmp

This command will un-install net-snmp on the server. When you run this command with th e -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove net-snmp when using the -y flag.

yum update net-snmp

This command will update net-snmp to the latest version. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove net-snmp, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y update net-snmp

This command will update net-snmp to the latest version. When you run this command with the -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove net-snmp when using the -y flag.

yum info net-snmp

This command will show you core information about the net-snmp package.

yum deplist net-snmp

This command will show you the dependencies for net-snmp. Thankfully, when using Yum, if dependencies are required, these are also installed at the same time so you don't have to worry too much about that.

yum check-update net-snmp

This command will check if there is an update waiting on net-snmp. When you run this command this will return nothing if there is nothing to update, or, will return the package name if the package is due to be updated.
