Description:

dmidecode reports information about x86 & ia64 hardware as described in the system BIOS according to the SMBIOS/DMI standard. This information typically includes system manufacturer, model name, serial number, BIOS version, asset tag as well as a lot of other details of varying level of interest and reliability depending on the manufacturer. This will often include usage status for the CPU sockets, expansion slots (e.g. AGP, PCI, ISA) and memory module slots, and the list of I/O ports (e.g. serial, parallel, USB).

Handy Yum Commands for dmidecode


Control the dmidecode package with the following handy commands outlined below.


Command

Description of Command

yum install dmidecode

This command will install dmidecode on the server.

yum remove dmidecode

This command will un-install dmidecode on the server. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove dmidecode, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y remove dmidecode

This command will un-install dmidecode on the server. When you run this command with th e -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove dmidecode when using the -y flag.

yum update dmidecode

This command will update dmidecode to the latest version. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove dmidecode, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y update dmidecode

This command will update dmidecode to the latest version. When you run this command with the -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove dmidecode when using the -y flag.

yum info dmidecode

This command will show you core information about the dmidecode package.

yum deplist dmidecode

This command will show you the dependencies for dmidecode. Thankfully, when using Yum, if dependencies are required, these are also installed at the same time so you don't have to worry too much about that.

yum check-update dmidecode

This command will check if there is an update waiting on dmidecode. When you run this command this will return nothing if there is nothing to update, or, will return the package name if the package is due to be updated.
