Description:

Ed is a line-oriented text editor, used to create, display, and modify text files (both interactively and via shell scripts). For most purposes, ed has been replaced in normal usage by full-screen editors (emacs and vi, for example). Ed was the original UNIX editor, and may be used by some programs. In general, however, you probably don't need to install it and you probably won't use it.

Handy Yum Commands for ed


Control the ed package with the following handy commands outlined below.

yum install ed

This command will install ed on the server.

yum remove ed

This command will un-install ed on the server. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove ed, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y remove ed

This command will un-install ed on the server. When you run this command with th e -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove ed when using the -y flag.

yum update ed

This command will update ed to the latest version. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove ed, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y update ed

This command will update ed to the latest version. When you run this command with the -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove ed when using the -y flag.

yum info ed

This command will show you core information about the ed package.

yum deplist ed

This command will show you the dependencies for ed. Thankfully, when using Yum, if dependencies are required, these are also installed at the same time so you don't have to worry too much about that.

yum check-update ed

This command will check if there is an update waiting on ed. When you run this command this will return nothing if there is nothing to update, or, will return the package name if the package is due to be updated.
