Pidgin allows you to talk to anyone using a variety of messaging protocols including AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, Jabber, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, ICQ, IRC, Novell Groupwise, QQ, Lotus Sametime, SILC, Simple and Zephyr. These protocols are implemented using a modular, easy to use design. To use a protocol, just add an account using the account editor. Pidgin supports many common features of other clients, as well as many unique features, such as perl scripting, TCL scripting and C plugins. Pidgin is not affiliated with or endorsed by America Online, Inc., Microsoft Corporation, Yahoo! Inc., or ICQ Inc.

Handy Yum Commands for pidgin


Control the pidgin package with the following handy commands outlined below.


Command

Description of Command

yum install pidgin

This command will install pidgin on the server.

yum remove pidgin

This command will un-install pidgin on the server. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove pidgin, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y remove pidgin

This command will un-install pidgin on the server. When you run this command with th e -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove pidgin when using the -y flag.

yum update pidgin

This command will update pidgin to the latest version. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove pidgin, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y update pidgin

This command will update pidgin to the latest version. When you run this command with the -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove pidgin when using the -y flag.

yum info pidgin

This command will show you core information about the pidgin package.

yum deplist pidgin

This command will show you the dependencies for pidgin. Thankfully, when using Yum, if dependencies are required, these are also installed at the same time so you don't have to worry too much about that.
