Description:

Fail2ban scans log files like /var/log/pwdfail or /var/log/apache/error_log and bans IP that makes too many password failures. It updates firewall rules to reject the IP address. To use the hostsdeny and shorewall actions you must install tcp_wrappers and shorewall respectively.

Handy Yum Commands for fail2ban


Control the fail2ban package with the following handy commands outlined below.


Command

Description of Command

yum install fail2ban

This command will install fail2ban on the server.

yum remove fail2ban

This command will un-install fail2ban on the server. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove fail2ban, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y remove fail2ban

This command will un-install fail2ban on the server. When you run this command with th e -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove fail2ban when using the -y flag.

yum update fail2ban

This command will update fail2ban to the latest version. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove fail2ban, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y update fail2ban

This command will update fail2ban to the latest version. When you run this command with the -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove fail2ban when using the -y flag.

This command will show you core information about the fail2ban package.

yum deplist fail2ban

This command will show you the dependencies for fail2ban. Thankfully, when using Yum, if dependencies are required, these are also installed at the same time so you don't have to worry too much about that.

This command will check if there is an update waiting on fail2ban. When you run this command this will return nothing if there is nothing to update, or, will return the package name if the package is due to be updated.
