The PTP daemon (PTPd) implements the Precision Time protocol (PTP) as defined by the relevant IEEE 1588 standard. PTP was developed to provide very precise time coordination of LAN connected computers. PTPd is a complete implementation of the IEEE 1588 specification for a standard (non-boundary) clock. PTPd has been tested with and is known to work properly with other IEEE 1588 implementations.

Handy Yum Commands for ptpd


Control the ptpd package with the following handy commands outlined below.

yum install ptpd

This command will install ptpd on the server.

yum remove ptpd

This command will un-install ptpd on the server. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove ptpd, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y remove ptpd

This command will un-install ptpd on the server. When you run this command with th e -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove ptpd when using the -y flag.

yum update ptpd

This command will update ptpd to the latest version. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove ptpd, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y update ptpd

This command will update ptpd to the latest version. When you run this command with the -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove ptpd when using the -y flag.
