Description:

Socat is a relay for bidirectional data transfer between two independent data channels. Each of these data channels may be a file, pipe, device (serial line etc. or a pseudo terminal), a socket (UNIX, IP4, IP6 - raw, UDP, TCP), an SSL socket, proxy CONNECT connection, a file descriptor (stdin etc.), the GNU line editor (readline), a program, or a combination of two of these. The compat-readline5 library is used to avoid GPLv2 vs GPLv3 issues.

Handy Yum Commands for socat


Control the socat package with the following handy commands outlined below.


Command

Description of Command

yum install socat

This command will install socat on the server.

yum remove socat

This command will un-install socat on the server. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove socat, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y remove socat

This command will un-install socat on the server. When you run this command with th e -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove socat when using the -y flag.

yum update socat

This command will update socat to the latest version. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove socat, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y update socat

This command will update socat to the latest version. When you run this command with the -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove socat when using the -y flag.

yum info socat

This command will show you core information about the socat package.

yum deplist socat

This command will show you the dependencies for socat. Thankfully, when using Yum, if dependencies are required, these are also installed at the same time so you don't have to worry too much about that.

yum check-update socat

This command will check if there is an update waiting on socat. When you run this command this will return nothing if there is nothing to update, or, will return the package name if the package is due to be updated.
