Tomcat can use the Apache Portable Runtime to provide superior scalability, performance, and better integration with native server technologies. The Apache Portable Runtime is a highly portable library that is at the heart of Apache HTTP Server 2.x. APR has many uses, including access to advanced IO functionality (such as sendfile, epoll and OpenSSL), OS level functionality (random number generation, system status, etc), and native process handling (shared memory, NT pipes and Unix sockets). This package contains the Tomcat native library which provides support for using APR in Tomcat.

Handy Yum Commands for tomcat-native


Control the tomcat-native package with the following handy commands outlined below.

yum install tomcat-native

This command will install tomcat-native on the server.

yum remove tomcat-native

This command will un-install tomcat-native on the server. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove tomcat-native, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y remove tomcat-native

This command will un-install tomcat-native on the server. When you run this command with th e -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove tomcat-native when using the -y flag.

yum update tomcat-native

This command will update tomcat-native to the latest version. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove tomcat-native, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y update tomcat-native

This command will update tomcat-native to the latest version. When you run this command with the -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove tomcat-native when using the -y flag.

This command will show you core information about the tomcat-native package.

yum deplist tomcat-native

This command will show you the dependencies for tomcat-native. Thankfully, when using Yum, if dependencies are required, these are also installed at the same time so you don't have to worry too much about that.

This command will check if there is an update waiting on tomcat-native. When you run this command this will return nothing if there is nothing to update, or, will return the package name if the package is due to be updated.
