Description:
The mailcap file is used by the metamail program. Metamail reads the mailcap file to determine how it should display non-text or multimedia material. Basically, mailcap associates a particular type of file with a particular program that a mail agent or other program can call in order to handle the file. Mailcap should be installed to allow certain programs to be able to handle non-text files. Also included in this package is the mime.types file which contains a list of MIME types and their filename "extension" associations, used by several applications e.g. to determine MIME types for filenames.

Control the mailcap package with the following handy commands outlined below.
yum install mailcap
This command will install mailcap on the server.
yum remove mailcap
This command will un-install mailcap on the server. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove mailcap, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.
yum -y remove mailcap
This command will un-install mailcap on the server. When you run this command with th e -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove mailcap when using the -y flag.
yum update mailcap
This command will update mailcap to the latest version. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove mailcap, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.
yum -y update mailcap
This command will update mailcap to the latest version. When you run this command with the -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove mailcap when using the -y flag.
yum info mailcap
This command will show you core information about the mailcap package.
yum deplist mailcap
This command will show you the dependencies for mailcap. Thankfully, when using Yum, if dependencies are required, these are also installed at the same time so you don't have to worry too much about that.
yum check-update mailcap
This command will check if there is an update waiting on mailcap. When you run this command this will return nothing if there is nothing to update, or, will return the package name if the package is due to be updated.
