Description:

Dnsmasq is lightweight, easy to configure DNS forwarder and DHCP server. It is designed to provide DNS and, optionally, DHCP, to a small network. It can serve the names of local machines which are not in the global DNS. The DHCP server integrates with the DNS server and allows machines with DHCP-allocated addresses to appear in the DNS with names configured either in each host or in a central configuration file. Dnsmasq supports static and dynamic DHCP leases and BOOTP for network booting of diskless machines.

Handy Yum Commands for dnsmasq


Control the dnsmasq package with the following handy commands outlined below.

yum install dnsmasq

This command will install dnsmasq on the server.

yum remove dnsmasq

This command will un-install dnsmasq on the server. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove dnsmasq, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y remove dnsmasq

This command will un-install dnsmasq on the server. When you run this command with th e -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove dnsmasq when using the -y flag.

yum update dnsmasq

This command will update dnsmasq to the latest version. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove dnsmasq, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y update dnsmasq

This command will update dnsmasq to the latest version. When you run this command with the -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove dnsmasq when using the -y flag.

yum info dnsmasq

This command will show you core information about the dnsmasq package.

yum deplist dnsmasq

This command will show you the dependencies for dnsmasq. Thankfully, when using Yum, if dependencies are required, these are also installed at the same time so you don't have to worry too much about that.

yum check-update dnsmasq

This command will check if there is an update waiting on dnsmasq. When you run this command this will return nothing if there is nothing to update, or, will return the package name if the package is due to be updated.
