Description:

Samba is the suite of programs by which a lot of PC-related machines share files, printers, and other information (such as lists of available files and printers). The Windows NT, OS/2, and Linux operating systems support this natively, and add-on packages can enable the same thing for DOS, Windows, VMS, UNIX of all kinds, MVS, and more. This package provides an SMB/CIFS server that can be used to provide network services to SMB/CIFS clients. Samba uses NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) protocols and does NOT need the NetBEUI (Microsoft Raw NetBIOS frame) protocol.

Handy Yum Commands for samba


Control the samba package with the following handy commands outlined below.


Command

yum install samba

This command will install samba on the server.

yum remove samba

This command will un-install samba on the server. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove samba, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y remove samba

This command will un-install samba on the server. When you run this command with th e -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove samba when using the -y flag.

yum update samba

This command will update samba to the latest version. When you run this command, you will be asked if you are sure that you want to remove samba, so you have to manually confirm that you want to do this.

yum -y update samba

This command will update samba to the latest version. When you run this command with the -y flag, you will not be prompted to check that you are sure you want to remove the package - so be sure you absolutely want to remove samba when using the -y flag.

yum info samba

This command will show you core information about the samba package.

yum deplist samba

This command will show you the dependencies for samba. Thankfully, when using Yum, if dependencies are required, these are also installed at the same time so you don't have to worry too much about that.

yum check-update samba

This command will check if there is an update waiting on samba. When you run this command this will return nothing if there is nothing to update, or, will return the package name if the package is due to be updated.
